With the Covid-19 pandemic taking over the world and the cities in the lockdown, we are staying at home more than ever. It is highly likely that work meetings will still remain online for awhile before we can return back to how life was pre-Covid especially since the extension of the Circuit Breaker here in Singapore. However, just because you are working from home, it doesn't mean you can't look good in your Zoom calls!
Looking good will make you feel more confident and you will be set for success in your business video calls. Here are some makeup tips from our Makeup Artists on how to look your best in video calls in the shortest possible time with just a few essential products!
Step 1: Use a moisturizer to prep your skin
Moisturizers will hydrate your skin and give it the glow from within look. This will help you appear well-rested and healthy in videos. We would recommend using a moisturizer that has multi-functionalities so that we cut down on the amount of time required to apply multiple products
One that we would recommend is the Embryolisse Laboratories Lait-Creme Concentre Multi-function Nourishing Moisturizer. This 2-in-1 moisturizer has been widely loved by many, including our makeup artists where it provides moisture to the skin and at the same time serve as a makeup primer for a longer makeup wear and smoother application.
Step 2: Use a concealer to spot conceal
Instead of applying foundation to your entire face, you can apply concealer on areas that need help. Common areas that would need extra love are your under eyes, acne and red marks. Once applied, you can use your finger, sponge or concealer brush to blend the concealer in seamlessly. Be sure to use light pressure so that it adheres to your skin well and you won't blend the coverage away too much.
One of the concealers we love is the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD concealer where it goes on the skin light which blends so smoothly and gives a very flawless finish. Looks awesome in cameras as well!
Step 3: Use blush to give your face some dimension and an extra touch of freshness
In order to give your face some dimension and make it look fresher, you can add some blush on the top of your cheekbones. We would recommend Coral tone blushes for ladies with warm skin tones and Pink tone blushes for those with cool skin tones. Use a fluffy brush that is about the size of the apples on your cheeks to distribute the product evenly.
With so many blushes out there to choose from, we recommend the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blushes as the wear time of it is amazing and with so many colours to choose from, you can be assured that you will be able to find a suitable shade for your skin tone.
Step 4: Use mascara for that extra definition on camera
It is key to accentuate the features on your face, especially the eyes as it is usually the first area which others would look at. By adding a few coats of mascara to your lashes, it would give your eyes extra definition and make them look brighter in the video in the shortest amount of time possible. That way you would still look defined even in poorer video quality which happens rather often in video calls.
For us, we love the DUP Curl Keeper Mascara as it is really easy to apply because of the smaller wands. Additionally, it is very long wearing but at the same time not too hard to remove at the end of the day. One of our makeup artists actually wore this for an overnight event and it lasted for a full 24 hours wear, really amazing!
Step 5: Fill in your eyebrows to frame your face
Eyebrows are extremely essential in framing our face and pulling the entire look together. Be sure to go light handed in the front part of the brows and gradually fill in the remaining parts of the brows with more color. We recommend using eyebrow powders as they are more beginner friendly.
The Anastasia Beverly Hills Pro Palette is our LOVE when it comes to eyebrow powders because it covers us makeup artists for all possible skin tones. The wear time for this eyebrow powders is pretty amazing as well which is quite hard to come by for brow products. They are also available in individual pots if you are looking at getting one for your own use. All you need is one or two dips and you will be able to get a very good colour pay off with it (be sure to use it with a lighter hand)!
Step 6: Use a natural lip colour for the final touch
A natural lip colour would be a beautiful final touch to complete the entire look with a healthy glow. For us, we always opt for a tinted lip balm as it helps to moisturize the lips and at the same time comfortable to wear with colours that are not too overpowering. As and when the color starts to fade, you can easily touch up with it again and moisturize it further to prevent having dry lips.
The Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Lip Booster is a good choice to go with where the color is natural but at the same time not too subtle where it would not show up on video and at the same time very moisturizing.
There are also other components which you will need to take note of to look good in video calls and the following are a few additional areas that are good to pay some attention to.
Lighting and Camera Angles
Just as it is important to have a good and quick makeup routine when getting ready in the morning, lighting and camera angles are also extremely important for looking good in video calls. Try sitting in front of a window with good natural lighting to ensure that your face is well lit softly for a warm vibe. You can also try positioning your camera from a slightly top down angle so that you would look slimmer in the video and prevent double chins from showing up but at the same time remember to not overdo it so that your eyes remains centered.
Background
Be sure to choose a part of your room that has a nice background to achieve a nice and neat vibe for your video calls. It would be helpful in leaving a good impression with the party that you are having the call with.
Quick Hairstyle
Lastly, it is important to ensure that our hair are neat and stylish to present our best selves to our clients, fellow colleagues, bosses and business partners. Straightening your hair is a good and easy way to ensure you look posh at all times. Alternatively, you can also experiment with heatless waves for effortless curls. There are numerous techniques that can curl your hair overnight and now is a great time to explore them and see what works for you. Don't fancy curls? You can also try styling your hair in a low bun, half up half down or a low braid. You will be surprised how much a simple hairstyle can enhance your appearance.
